小説英語⇔日本語【Very Short】第12話~The Original Curry~
元々身体の弱かった母が三年前に病死した後、父と二人だけの生活が
始まった。家事や雑用を手分けしてこなすことになり、律の自由な時間は
減ったけれど、病弱な母の手伝いをしてきた律にとって、それほど苦だとは
感じる事なく、むしろ週末に父とする家事は楽しいものとなっていた。
律が洗濯、父は家中に掃除機をかけ、夕方から二人で新聞の折り込チラシを
見ながらスーパーに買い物に行く。献立を話し合いながら一週間分の
買物をして、家に帰り一緒に下ごしらえをした。最初はぎこちなかった父も、
料理作りに積極的になっていった。
Ritsu's mother always suffered her poor health. She died
three years ago. Ritsu and her father had to start their life
without her from scratch. They had to divide chores and housework,
and consequently, Ritsu's free time diminished. However, because
she had often helped her mother for housework on the daily basis,
doing additional chores was not much of pain for her. In fact,
she began to feel fun sharing it with her father on weekends.
Ritsu did the laundry while her father did the vacuuming.
In the late afternoon, they would go to supermarkets together
with coupons in hands to pick foods on special sale. They talked
about their dinner menu for the next 7 days and bought the grocery
needed. After they got home, they prepared the whole-week meals
and stored them in the freezer. All they would have to do was to
heat them up. At first Ritsu could tell her father was awkward
doing things in every step. But soon later he seemed to enjoy cooking.
母の作るカレーを、律は母の手伝いをしながら覚えていた。同じ味には
ならなかったけれど、父との合作で新しいカレーを創った。カレーのルウを
使わず、カレー粉とホールトマトの缶詰でベースを作るのが母の手法
だったが、完熟トマトを代わりに使ってみようと父がアイデアを出し、
完成したカレーは、さっぱりしているのに、野菜の甘さと香辛料が深い
こくを出し、二人のお気に入りメニューになった。
Ritsu learned how to make her mother's original curry by
helping. Even though Ritsu and her father could never manage
to make their curry to the level of her mother's, after a few
tries they made a different one and it was still delicious.
Her mother never used curry roux but used seasoning mixed with
curry powder and fresh tomatoes as the base. Ritsu's
father came up with the idea of using canned-whole-tomatoes instead
and with seasoning mixed with curry powder, and it worked. Their
completion of curry had depth in taste generated by vegetables'
primal sweetness blended with the spice, which became their favorite meal.
平日は由美子の家に寄って宿題を済ませた。勉強をサボりがちな娘を
知っている由美子の母親は、成績の良い律を歓迎していた。試験前は
紗江も加わり、三人で勉強している最中、数学の公式や物理の法則でさえ
いろいろな話題に発展し、笑いながら過ごすそんな時間は、律にとって
気分転換になった。家に戻れば、後は調理するだけに準備してある食材を
冷凍庫から出し、母がそうであった様に、律は父が帰るまで食べずに
待っている。そんな毎日だった。
During weekdays Ritsu spent at Yumiko’s doing homework
with her. Yumiko’s mother welcomed Ritsu because she knew
that Ritsu was very good at school and hoped that Ritsu could
help her daughter. Yumiko never liked to study much less do
homework. Right before exams Sae usually joined Ritsu and Yumiko.
While studying for exams, they chatted away from their topics on
math formulas and physical laws. They spent time studying and
laughing. Ritsu had good time for a change. When she came home,
she took out the prepared food for the dinner from the freezer
and waited for her father to return just like her mother had used
to do. That was Ritsu’s every day of her life after her mother's death.
